Where trucking is the local economy

Of the 30,929 Brampton businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's June 2026 count, 11,844 were in transportation and warehousing, about 38 percent. No other sector comes close. The city grew by 10.6% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, to 656,480 people.

That mix brings a recognizable set of tax questions. An owner operator who incorporates needs to know whether the corporation stands up as a business of its own or, in the CRA's eyes, is a personal services business. A carrier moving freight between provinces has to charge the sales tax of the province where the shipment ends. Trucks, trailers and the equipment around them are depreciated in their own capital cost allowance classes, and fuel, insurance and repairs need records that will survive a review.

Service scope

What a Brampton engagement covers

The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.

Owner operator corporations

Whether the structure holds up, and how the owner is paid from it.

HST on freight

The right rate for shipments that end in another province.

Fleet payroll

Source deductions, T4 slips and records of employment for drivers and warehouse staff.

Common question

Can an owner operator's corporation lose the small business rate?

Yes. If the driver would reasonably be regarded as an employee of the carrier but for the corporation, the CRA can treat it as a personal services business. The small business deduction is then lost, the federal rate on that income rises, and deductions shrink to a narrow list. The answer turns on how the work actually happens, not on the wording of the contract.
