One corporation, one client, and a rule worth knowing about

An incorporated consultant working mainly through a single client sits close to a rule that most other small corporations never meet. Where the CRA concludes that the worker would reasonably be regarded as an employee of that client but for the corporation, the corporation can be treated as a personal services business, and the tax treatment that follows is materially different from an ordinary small corporation.

HBT reviews where an engagement sits against the factors the CRA weighs, prepares the corporate year end and the personal return together, and sets out how the owner is being paid and what each option costs. Where the exposure is real we say so plainly, because the cost of finding out later is considerably higher than the cost of asking now.

Before you call

What happens on the first call

The first conversation is free and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. A team member in Calgary answers, asks what is urgent, and explains the useful next step. There is no obligation to start an engagement.

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the pressure point

A CRA letter, a filing deadline, messy books, payroll, or a decision you need to understand.

  2. Step 2

We ask a few practical questions

Entity type, province, records, software, and the date that matters. You do not need a perfect file first.

  3. Step 3

You leave with a next step

We explain the work, the information required, timing, and price before anything begins.

Fees

How we price the work

The first conversation is free. Starting fees are published on the fees page. Those amounts are starting prices and subject to 5% GST. Final fees depend on complexity, volume, record quality and scope. Fixed fees are provided where the engagement scope can be determined in advance. You will know the price before paid work starts.

Service scope

What a consultant engagement covers

The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.

Corporate year end and personal return

Both prepared together, so what the corporation reports and what the owner reports agree with each other.

Personal services business review

Where the work sits against the factors the CRA weighs, set out before a filing position is taken rather than after.

How the owner gets paid

Salary, dividends or a mix, with the administrative consequences of each explained.

How the work begins

A clear process before the accounting starts

  1. Step 1

    Tell us about the engagements

How many clients, how long each has run, and whether you work through your own corporation.

  2. Step 2

    Scope and price agreed

Priced on the number of entities and the volume of transactions, confirmed before work starts.

  3. Step 3

    A position you can explain

Records and reasoning kept so the treatment applied can be supported if it is ever questioned.

Common question

What does accounting for an incorporated consultant cost?

A corporate year end with the T2 return starts at $2,500 and a business owner personal return at $350. A corporate nil return starts at $750 where the corporation was inactive. Corporate tax planning and consultation is $350 per hour, which is the usual basis for reviewing personal services business exposure or a salary and dividend mix. Amounts are starting prices plus 5% GST and are confirmed before any paid work begins.
