Construction leads, by a distance

Surrey had 568,322 people in 2021, up 9.7% in five years, and 24,332 businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's latest count. 4,648 of them were in construction, more than twice the next sector.

Construction brings its own paperwork. A business whose main activity is construction and that pays subcontractors files T5018 slips each year. A contractor generally pays British Columbia's 7% PST on the materials it uses on a job, and none of that comes back, while the GST on the same invoices does. HBT handles Surrey files remotely from Calgary and keeps those two taxes in separate accounts from the start.

Common question

Does a Surrey construction business have to file T5018 slips?

If construction is its main business activity and it pays subcontractors for construction services, yes. The T5018 reports those payments, and it is due six months after the end of the reporting period the business chooses, either the calendar year or its fiscal year.
