Vaughan grew 5.5% between 2016 and 2021 to 323,103 people, and had 20,003 businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's latest count. Professional services led with 3,137, with construction close behind at 2,774.

Both groups tend to build up profit inside a company, and that is where a holding company starts to earn its keep: moving surplus out of an operating company that carries the business risk, or holding investments apart from it. The structure has to be put together in the right order, and HBT reviews it with the owner's lawyer before anything is signed. HBT works on Vaughan files remotely from Calgary.

Common question

When does a holding company make sense for a Vaughan business?

Usually once the operating company earns more than the owners need to take out, or holds assets worth keeping away from its business risk. A holding company can often receive dividends from the operating company free of tax and keep those funds apart, but it adds a second set of returns and fees, so it has to pay its way.
