A growing northern capital

Whitehorse grew by 12.4% between 2016 and 2021, to 28,201 people, and Statistics Canada's latest count found 1,594 businesses with employees there. Construction led with 236, well ahead of health care (154) and professional services (149).

Living in the Yukon brings a deduction that people in the south never see. The whole territory lies in the prescribed northern zone, so residents can claim northern residents deductions on the personal return: a set amount for each day lived there and, for employees, a deduction for travel benefits their employer provides. Business owners qualify as well, and many newcomers miss the claim in their first year. HBT works from Calgary and handles Whitehorse files remotely.

Common question

How much can a Whitehorse resident claim as a northern residents deduction?

A basic $11 for each day lived in the northern zone, plus another $11 a day for someone who maintains the home and is the only person in it claiming the basic amount. The claim needs at least six months of continuous residence in the zone, beginning or ending in the year, and is made on Form T2222.
