A capital of practices and consultancies

Fredericton, New Brunswick's capital, had 63,116 people in 2021, up 7.5% in five years, and 2,591 businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's latest count, led by health care (388), retail (369) and professional, scientific and technical services (309).

A small service business in New Brunswick charges 15% HST on most of what it sells. Under the quick method it still charges the full amount but sends the CRA a smaller, fixed share of its sales instead of tracking the tax on every expense, and a business with few taxable costs often comes out ahead. Not every business qualifies, and not every one that qualifies gains. HBT works from Calgary and handles Fredericton files remotely.

Common question

Can a Fredericton consultant use the HST quick method?

Usually, if its annual taxable sales, counting HST and the sales of associated businesses, are $400,000 or less. The business charges full HST, remits a set percentage of its sales, gets a 1% credit on the first $30,000 each year, and still claims back HST on capital purchases. Lawyers, accountants, bookkeepers and financial consultants cannot use it. The election is made on Form GST74.
