A port city where retail leads
Saint John had 69,895 people in 2021 and 2,523 businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's latest count. Retail was the largest group with 366, followed by health care (309) and professional services (259).
Retail runs on small transactions, and every one of them is a record. The CRA expects a business to keep its books and the documents behind them for six years, and a till that keeps only daily totals can leave a gap when an auditor asks for detail. Getting the record keeping right costs little at the start and a great deal later. HBT works from Calgary and handles Saint John files remotely.

Service scope
What a Saint John engagement covers
The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.
Record keeping
A filing system for receipts, invoices and sales data that would stand up to an audit.
From the till to the ledger
Daily sales, card deposits and cash reconciled every month.
HST and year end
Returns, input tax credits and the T2 prepared from the same books.
Common question
How long does a Saint John business have to keep its records?
Generally six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. That covers ledgers, invoices, receipts and sales records, and records kept electronically have to stay in a readable electronic format. Some records, such as those about the company's shares, must be kept longer, and destroying records early needs the CRA's permission.
