Clinics and practices lead the count

Kingston had 132,485 people in 2021, up 7% in five years, and 4,457 businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's latest count. Health care and social assistance was the largest sector by a clear margin, with 824, ahead of retail (632) and construction (457).

Many of the physicians and dentists in that count practise through professional corporations, and Ontario allows them family shareholders: a spouse, child or parent may hold shares without voting rights, and shares for minor children can be held in trust. That makes family dividends possible, but since 2018 the federal tax on split income has taxed them at the top personal rate unless an exclusion applies, so the structure has to be planned with both sets of rules in view. HBT works from Calgary and handles Kingston files remotely.

Common question

Can a Kingston doctor pay dividends to family members?

Ontario lets a physician's or dentist's spouse, children and parents hold shares in the professional corporation, so dividends can be paid to them. Since 2018, though, the tax on split income generally taxes those dividends at the top personal rate unless an exclusion applies, such as a family member who works in the practice an average of at least 20 hours a week, or a spouse once the professional has turned 65.
