Where retail leads the count
Lethbridge had 98,406 people in 2021, up 6.1% in five years, and 3,883 businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's latest count. Retail was the largest group, 570 businesses, ahead of health care (508) and professional services (400).
For a retailer, the number that moves taxable income most is closing inventory. The Income Tax Act lets a business value it at the lower of cost and fair market value, or the whole stock at fair market value, and the method has to stay the same from one year to the next. A count is far easier when the shelves are thin, which is one reason a retailer might choose a year end after the holiday rush rather than December 31. Common question
Can a Lethbridge retailer choose a year end other than December 31?
A corporation can. It sets its fiscal year end with its first return, no tax year can run longer than 53 weeks, and changing the year end later needs the CRA's approval. A retailer might pick the end of January, when stock is low and easier to count. An unincorporated business generally reports on the calendar year.
