One

Construction first, and a northern deduction

Grande Prairie had 64,141 people in 2021, up 1.5% in five years, and Statistics Canada's latest count found 3,442 businesses with employees. Construction led with 429, about 12 percent of the total, ahead of retail trade (380) and professional, scientific and technical services (368).

Grande Prairie also appears on the CRA's list of Alberta places in a prescribed intermediate zone. That brings a deduction for living there: a residency amount for each day and, separately, a deduction for eligible travel, both at one half of the full northern amounts. HBT works from Calgary and handles Grande Prairie files remotely.

Four

Can a Grande Prairie resident claim the northern residents deductions?

Yes, once they have lived there on a permanent basis for a continuous period of at least six consecutive months, which can begin or end in the tax year. The CRA lists Grande Prairie among the Alberta places in a prescribed intermediate zone, where a resident can claim one half of the deductions: a residency deduction for each day lived in the zone and a deduction for eligible travel. Both are worked out on Form T2222.
