Health care and retail, almost level

Red Deer is Alberta's third largest municipality, with 100,844 people at the 2021 Census, almost exactly its 2016 count. Of its 3,865 businesses with employees, 559 were in health care and 556 in retail, with construction third at 390.

Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so a Red Deer shop deals only with GST at 5%. Clinics are different again. Most of what physicians, dentists and many other regulated health practitioners provide to patients is exempt from GST, which sounds like a saving but cuts both ways: no GST is charged, and none of the GST the clinic pays on rent, equipment and supplies comes back. HBT works from Calgary, down Highway 2, and handles Red Deer files remotely.

How we price the work

The first conversation is free. Starting fees are published on the fees page. Those amounts are starting prices and subject to 5% GST. Service scope

What a Red Deer engagement covers

The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.

GST for health practices

Which services are exempt, which are taxable, and whether to register.

Professional corporations

Owner pay and retained earnings at Alberta's 11% combined small business rate.

Shops and payroll

GST returns, source deductions and year end slips for retail staff.

Common question

Does a Red Deer clinic charge GST?

Usually not on its core services. Health care services that physicians, dentists and many other regulated practitioners provide to individuals are exempt, so the clinic collects no GST on them and cannot claim input tax credits for the GST on its own costs. Cosmetic procedures done without a medical reason are taxable, and a clinic whose taxable sales pass the small supplier threshold has to register.
