A retail sales tax that works differently again

Manitoba charges a 7 percent retail sales tax alongside the 5 percent federal GST. Like BC, it is not harmonized and not broadly recoverable, so RST paid on inputs usually lands as a cost. Unlike BC, Manitoba has signalled rate changes more than once in recent years, which makes keeping the coding current worth doing deliberately.

Winnipeg also carries a heavy transport and distribution base. HBT already works with trucking and owner operators in Alberta, and the records that sector needs, cost per unit, fuel, interprovincial GST, travel the same way regardless of which prairie province the yard is in.

Fees

How we price the work

The first conversation is free. Starting fees are published on the fees page. Those amounts are starting prices and subject to 5% GST. Final fees depend on complexity, volume, record quality and scope. Fixed fees are provided where the engagement scope can be determined in advance. You will know the price before paid work starts.

Service scope

What a Winnipeg engagement covers

The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.

GST and RST separated

Coded apart so the federal return files cleanly and the RST cost stays visible.

Corporate year end and T2

Filed federally with Manitoba corporate tax through the same return.

Transport sector records

Where the business hauls, the per unit cost records that sector needs.

How the work begins

A clear process before the accounting starts

  1. Step 1

    Check both registrations

Federal GST and Manitoba RST, and what is current.

  2. Step 2

    Scope and fee in writing

    Before any paid work begins.

  3. Step 3

    Monthly close

    Both taxes reconciled each period.

Common question

What sales taxes does a Winnipeg business charge?

Generally 5 percent federal GST plus 7 percent Manitoba retail sales tax, filed separately. RST is not harmonized with GST and does not carry the same broad input tax credit mechanism, so RST paid on inputs is usually a cost rather than a recoverable amount. The two need to be coded separately in the books.
