Ask the lender which level before buying one

Compilation and financial statements start at $1,750 at HBT. That is a compilation engagement, which presents information supplied by management and provides no assurance. It satisfies most small business lending covenants.

Where a lender, buyer or regulator needs a review or an audit instead, the cost rises materially and for good reason. Confirm which level is actually required before commissioning anything, because buying an audit when a compilation satisfies the requirement is expensive.

Before you call

What happens on the first call

The first conversation is free and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. A team member in Calgary answers, asks what is urgent, and explains the useful next step. There is no obligation to start an engagement.

Fees

How we price the work

The first conversation is free. Starting fees are published on the fees page. Those amounts are starting prices and subject to 5% GST. Final fees depend on complexity, volume, record quality and scope. Fixed fees are provided where the engagement scope can be determined in advance. You will know the price before paid work starts.

Service scope

What drives the figure

The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.

The level of assurance

Compilation, review and audit are three different engagements at three very different prices.

The state of the books

Statements are prepared from reconciled records. A cleanup is quoted separately.

Who relies on them

The intended user sets the requirement, which sets the level, which sets the price.

How the work begins

A clear process before the accounting starts

  1. Step 1

    Confirm the requirement

Ask the lender in writing which level they need.

  2. Step 2

    Scope and price agreed

In writing, with responsibilities stated, before preparation.

  3. Step 3

    Delivered and explained

The statements prepared and the limits of the engagement explained.

Common question

How much do financial statements cost in Canada?

At HBT Accounting compilation and financial statements start at $1,750 plus 5% GST, and a corporate year end with the T2 return starts at $2,500. A compilation provides no assurance, which is what most small business lenders require. A review or an audit costs materially more, so confirm which level the lender actually needs first.
