A fast growing city, and the payroll that follows

Kelowna grew by 13.5% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, to 144,576 people, more than twice the national rate of 5.2%. Statistics Canada's latest count found 7,298 businesses with employees there, led by construction (1,007), health care (963) and retail (866).

Growth shows up first in payroll. British Columbia's employer health tax costs nothing until an employer's B.C. remuneration for the year passes $1,000,000, and a business that keeps hiring can cross that line in one good year. Associated companies share a single exemption, so a group of small companies can owe the tax even when none of them would on its own. HBT works from Calgary and handles Kelowna files remotely.

Service scope

What a Kelowna engagement covers

The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.

Employer health tax

Registration once payroll is set to pass the exemption, and the annual return.

PST and GST

Two registrations and two returns, with PST paid on materials kept out of the GST claim.

Seasonal cash and remittances

Deposits, quieter months and the remittance calendar planned together.

Common question

When does a Kelowna business start paying the B.C. employer health tax?

When its B.C. remuneration for the calendar year passes $1,000,000. Between that and $1,500,000 the tax is 5.85% of the amount over $1,000,000; above $1,500,000 it is 1.95% of the whole payroll. Associated employers share the exemption, and once their combined payroll passes $1,500,000, none of them gets it.
