Mississauga businesses, served remotely
Accountant for Mississauga businesses
Remote accounting for Mississauga businesses from a Calgary CPA firm: Ontario HST, the Employer Health Tax and owner pay for professional firms.

Calgary office · eligible remote work across Canada
A city of professional firms, and the payroll that comes with them
Mississauga had 717,961 residents at the 2021 Census and 31,541 businesses with employees in Statistics Canada's latest count. The largest group, 5,270 of them, is professional, scientific and technical services: consultants, engineers, designers and the firms that serve head offices. Its population slipped by 0.5% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses.
For a professional firm the tax questions are mostly about the owners: how the corporation pays them, how much profit it keeps, and what Ontario's Employer Health Tax adds once an eligible employer's payroll passes $1,000,000. HBT works from Calgary, has no Mississauga office, and handles those files remotely with the same CPA on the work each year.

Ontario HST

Owner pay for professional firms
Salary, dividends and retained earnings planned before the year closes.
Payroll and the health tax
Source deductions, T4 slips and the Employer Health Tax once payroll is large enough to owe it.
Common question
Does a Mississauga business have to pay Ontario's Employer Health Tax?
Only once its Ontario payroll passes the exemption. Eligible employers, those with Ontario payroll of $5,000,000 or less, pay nothing on the first $1,000,000. Above that the rate is set by total payroll and reaches 1.95% once payroll passes $400,000. An employer with more than $5,000,000 of payroll gets no exemption.
