A growing city of small firms

Oshawa grew by 10% between 2016 and 2021, to 175,383 people. Statistics Canada's latest count found 3,926 businesses with employees, and the largest group, 632, was professional, scientific and technical services, ahead of retail (559) and health care (434).

Many of those firms began as one person working under their own name, and sooner or later the owner asks whether to incorporate. Ontario lowered its small business rate from 3.2% to 2.2% for income earned from July 1, 2026, so a corporation now pays 11.2% combined on the first $500,000 of active business income. That saving holds only for profit left in the company. HBT works from Calgary and handles Oshawa files remotely.

Common question

When should an Oshawa sole proprietor incorporate?

Usually once the business earns more than the owner needs to live on. Profit kept in an Ontario corporation is taxed at 11.2% on the first $500,000 of active business income, and taxed again personally only when it is paid out. If every dollar is needed at home, a corporation mostly adds cost: a second return, separate books and legal fees.
