One

The CRA is federal, so the first steps are the same everywhere

A CRA letter sets a date to respond, and the rules behind it do not change with the province. What changes is the business: its records, its software, the years under review and who knows where the documents are. HBT starts by reading the letter, confirming the period and the deadline, and finding out what the CRA has already received.

Once the business authorizes HBT as its representative, the CRA can deal with HBT on the file. HBT reconciles the records the review asks about, drafts the response for the owner to approve and keeps a log of what was sent and when. A matter that involves suspected fraud or court action needs a tax lawyer, and HBT will say so early.

Two

What representation covers

Notice and deadline check

The period, the type of review and the response date confirmed from the letter itself.

Records brought into agreement

The books and supporting documents the CRA asked about reconciled before anything is sent.

Response and follow up

A written response for your approval, then every call and letter tracked until the file closes.

Three

How the work begins

  1. Step 1: Send the letter

A scan of the notice and the last filed returns. Nothing else is needed yet.

  2. Step 2: Authorize and agree scope

Representation authorized with the CRA and the hourly scope written down before paid work starts.

  3. Step 3: Respond and close out

The response sent, the CRA's reply explained and any reassessment checked before you pay.

Can HBT represent a business outside Alberta in a CRA audit?

Yes, when the scope fits. The business authorizes HBT with the CRA's Form AUT-01 or through Represent a Client, and from then on the CRA can discuss the file with HBT. Everything else happens remotely: records are shared securely, responses are drafted for the owner's approval and nobody has to travel to Calgary.
