How firms differ
Online accounting firm against a local CPA firm
What you gain and give up with a fully remote accounting firm against one with an office you can visit. An honest comparison, including where remote wins.
Personal tax from $65+. Monthly bookkeeping from $500/mo+. Corporate year end and T2 from $2,500+. See starting fees. Amounts are starting prices plus 5% GST.
Calgary office · eligible remote work across Canada
The question is not remote against local, it is who answers
Fully remote firms built their model on software and scale, which usually means tidy onboarding, fixed monthly pricing and a support queue rather than a person. Traditional local firms give you a named accountant and a door to walk through, and often will not tell you what anything costs until you have had a meeting.
HBT sits deliberately between the two. The work runs remotely for clients across Canada, the fee schedule is published rather than quoted on request, and there is a real office in southeast Calgary with the same person on your file each year. What matters is not which category a firm belongs to but whether you can reach someone who already knows your business.
Before you call
What happens on the first call
The first conversation is free and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. A team member in Calgary answers, asks what is urgent, and explains the useful next step. There is no obligation to start an engagement.

Fees
How we price the work
The first conversation is free. Starting fees are published on the fees page. Those amounts are starting prices and subject to 5% GST. Final fees depend on complexity, volume, record quality and scope. Fixed fees are provided where the engagement scope can be determined in advance. You will know the price before paid work starts.

Service scope
What to compare, whichever model you pick
The exact responsibilities, timing, and records depend on the agreed engagement. These are the areas we can discuss when shaping a scope that fits your business.
Who actually does the work
Ask whether a CPA reviews the file and whether the same person handles it next year.
Whether the price is published
A firm that will not state a starting price before a meeting has made a choice about how it sells.
How you reach them in March
Support queues lengthen in filing season. Ask what response time looks like then, not in August.

How the work begins
A clear process before the accounting starts
- Step 1
A free first conversation
No charge, no obligation, and no requirement to switch.
- Step 2
Scope and price in writing
Before any paid work, including what sits outside the engagement.
- Step 3
The same person next year
Continuity is the thing most firms quietly do not offer.
Common question
Is an online accounting firm as good as a local CPA firm?
For most small businesses the delivery model matters less than three things: whether the firm is CPA regulated, whether the same person stays on your file, and whether you know the price before the work starts. Remote firms often win on price transparency and onboarding. Local firms often win on continuity and being reachable. A firm that offers both is reasonable to expect rather than a compromise.
